The City of Stirling is made up of seven Wards (similar to seats in State or Federal Parliament) and the Council itself has 14 members.

The Mayor is elected by and from the Council Members and holds office for two years. Councillor's normal term of office is four years and as near as possible half of the Council Members retire each two years.

Each Ward has two Councillors, only one of which will retire in any election year.
