Coat of Arms
The City of Stirling’s Coat of Arms celebrates Stirling’s history and reflects the diversity of the natural and physical landscape of the area.

The crest is the Dianella flower, which grew in parts of the City before residential development expanded in recent years. The suburb of Dianella takes its name from the flower. The top quarters of the shield contain the crest of Governor James Stirling, in the form of the harts head and coronet and a castle which provides the link with the Royal Burgh of Stirling in Scotland. The dolphin represents the ocean on the western boundary of the City of Stirling, with a representation of the surf below the dolphin. The supporters are the Swan – emblematic of Western Australia – and the Pelican which is an inhabitant of the Swan River and the various lakes and swamps in the City of Stirling.

The motto ‘Be Sterling’ is spoken by King Richard in Shakespeare’s ‘Richard II’, Act 4, Scene 1. Sterling means a mark of excellence; to stand every test; of genuine quality; the highest standard of valuation. As such, to ‘Be Sterling’ is to be dependable.
